Roam If You Want To

1–2 minutes

Now that I have built this infernal blog thing, and feel oddly compelled to share every inanity and banality with my friends and the world at large (tweet, tweet), I’ve had to put some thought into how we’re actually going to update it and upload photos while travelling. So I’ve done a little budgeting:

My camera takes photos which are 4MB each. My Vodacom mobile contract (South African) charges $32/MB (R235/MB) data roaming, so each uploaded photo will result in $128 in data charges. 250 photos uploaded to Facebook or this blog will cost $32,000.

If I use my Rogers (Canada) contract SIM card, the same 250 photos will cost me $51,200.

Therefore, if I use the Vodacom mobile to upload the 250 photos instead of Rogers, I’ll save myself almost $20,000 (R140,000).

With those savings, I can pay for the entire trip. Thank you Vodacom!

I’m just so glad I went through this little budgeting process.

I’ll sponsor one photo, but only if you crop it down to $10!

Better bet will be internet cafe’s, you’ll find them in the most exotic places and connectivity in many parts of Africa is better than SA…
